The only problem is going down the Virtual Synth path is not cheap, now I want Rob Papen's synths and all of Arturia's too. The Logic Pro synths are all excellent and could keep you going in programming for years with out looking for anything else, but for me certain weirdness just seems to flow naturally from the NI stuff (that's good for me anyways). My other favorite virtual synth, right now, is the demo from Arturia Jupiter-8 - amazingly good when compared the the original Roland hardware synth, looks like they will be getting a sale from me soon, though I'd really like to get their set it's a lot of $$$$ FM8 sounds better (I think) than the DX7 series from Yamaha and is not to terribly difficult to make sounds with. I never was a fan of programming FM synthesis, I never could get my head around it. My favorite AU synth right now is NI's FM8. Massive is well massive sounding, Absynth is sort of like a Korg Wavestation had a child with an Access Virus or Waldorf Microwave. But also like Logic, the plugs can be a little persnickety at times! I think Komplete, like Logic, is an excellent value.
